****** TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS ******

Basel

Singles – Semifinal: (1) J del Potro def. E Roger-Vasselin 6-4 4-6 6-2

Back to the final for Juan Martin del Potro, who now has almost a thousand point lead on Tomas Berdych in the contest for a year-end Top Five spot. It still looks as if he could end the year at #4, or even #3. Edouard Roger-Vasselin can’t even dream of such things — but he will very likely end the year in the Top Fifty, which is probably more than he expected when 2013 started!

Singles – Semifinal: (3) R Federer def. V Pospisil 6-3 6-7(3-7) 7-5

Was that “Come on, Roger!” that Roger Federer’s fans were shouting in this match, or was it “Oh, come on, Roger”? Because Federer probably should have lost it. He was down a break in the third set before once again getting things going. But he had to spend two hours and forty minutes on the court to reach his eighth straight Basel final. Hard to imagine that he’ll have much left for the final — or for Paris. The good news is, since he is back in the final here, he will keep the #6 ranking — and, because Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga cannot both pass him because of the way the Paris draw worked out, we show him as qualified for London. By the skin of his teeth. It appears Vasek Pospisil will be #32.

Doubles – Semifinal: Knowle/Marach def. (3) Fyrstenberg/Matkowski 6-4 7-6(7-4)

Fyrstenberg/Matkowski are still the leaders in the contest for the last London spot, but they are likely to need more at Paris to clinch….

Doubles – Semifinal: Huey/Inglot def. Llodra/Mahut 7-6(7-3) 7-6(7-2)

If Huey/Inglot had played all year as well as they have been playing lately, they might be London contenders. As it is, it’s probably too late. But they are still just barely alive in the Race, and very happy that Fyrstenberg/Matkowski lost….

Valencia

Singles – Semifinal: (1) D Ferrer def. (3) N Almagro 6-2 6-3

Quite a weekend for reruns. This means that three of last year’s finalists at this time of year are back in the final. For David Ferrer, it doesn’t make much difference; he is #3 no matter what. But he improves his odds of staying #3 after his Paris title comes off. And he’ll get a chance to at last win a final after losing his last five straight. Nicolas Almagro will have to settle for #13, the ranking he came in with. And his very slight chances of qualifying for London have pretty well evaporated.

Singles – Semifinal: M Youzhny def. D Tursunov 6-2 6-4

It’s going to be quite a final for fans of defense! Expect a lot of long points. If Mikhail Youzhny can win it, he’ll make it all the way to #15. Even if he loses, he’ll rise from #21 to #18. Dmitry Tursunov will probably be #30, meaning that he ought to earn an Australian Open seed.

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. Haas/Sa 6-3 6-4

Doubles – Semifinal: (2) Peya/Soares def. J Murray/Peers 6-3 7-6(7-4)

Murray/Peers led by a break in the second set, and by a minibreak in the tiebreak. And still lost. A real blow to their London hopes. They don’t lose any ground, because Fyrstenberg/Matkowski also lost. But they had a big chance to gain ground, which they probably needed, and they failed.
