Caroline Wozniacki continued her winning ways with a 63 62 first round victory over former US Open champion Samantha Stosur at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open on Monday.

Wozniacki only arrived in Wuhan on Sunday evening, just hours after winning the Toray Pan Pacific title in Toyko.

“I played really well today,” said Wozniacki, who has been on a hot streak of form since her run to the US Open semi-finals earlier this month. “I guess as long as I just keep pounding and keep grinding, I’m going to take it. I’m on a roll, so hopefully I can keep pushing myself and play well.”

Two-time Wimbledon champion and 2014 Wuhan winner Petra Kvitova earned her second round berth with an emphatic 63 61 victory over Jelena Ostapenko. Kvitova was joined in round two by Dominika Cibulkova, Johanna Konta and Jelena Jankovic.

Fourth seed Simona Halep, who got a bye into the second round, is already through to round three after a rib injury hit Monday’s opponent Irina-Camelia Begu. Seventh seed Carla Suarez Navarro and US Open runner-up Karolina Pliskova are also through to the last 16.

Tuesday sees defending Wuhan Open champion Venus Williams return to Wuhan’s 15,000-seater center court when she opens the defence of her title against Yulia Putintseva.

Angelique Kerber plays her first match since becoming World No.1 when she takes on big-hitting Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic.

Konta takes on Shuai Zhang after Zhang won a compelling all-Chinese first round battle against Shuai Peng on Monday. “I think it will be a fantastic occasion,” said Konta of playing a Chinese opponent in front of Zhang’s home crowd. “I expect it to be a great battle out there and I’m looking forward to being part of it.”
