Interview: ATP Boss Chris Kermode; Sharapova Update; Venus Returns

The ATP Executive Chairman and President Chris Kermode is a guest on this week’s Tennis Podcast, which is produced in association with the Telegraph.

In a wide-ranging, 30-minute interview, Kermode, who has just been re-elected for a further three years, tells David Law about how the independent review into the Tennis Integrity Unit will work, how players on the ATP circuit are kept up-to-date with changes to the anti-doping banned list, and how the sport is trying to educate the next generation.

Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova announces that she failed a drug test being tested positive for Meldonium at the Australian Open at a press conference at the LA Downtown Hotel in Los Angeles, California, USA, 07 March 2016. The anti-ischemic drug ‘Meldonium’ has been added to the latest list of forbidden susbtances issued by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA), which has added caffeine and nicotine to substances it is monitoring. How much could the independent review end up costing? Should betting companies be allowed to sponsor tournaments? And are tennis players tested for drugs often enough?

He also talks about plans for an Under-21 tournament in 2017 which will be used to showcase the next generation of tennis stars, and to try out a range of potential new rules, such as removing the warm-up at the start of matches and an on-court countdown-clock to time players between points.

Also on this edition of the Tennis Podcast, Law and Catherine Whitaker discuss the latest developments in the Sharapova case, whether the recent lost sets of Novak Djokovic and lost matches of Angelique Kerber are just ‘a blip’, and reflect on the return to Indian Wells of Venus Williams for the first time in 15 years.
