Semifinals to Begin at 9 a.m. (PST) at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

After an incredible day of fourth-round and quarterfinal doubles action at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, the semifinals are set for the 127th Annual Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship.

In an early-afternoon quarterfinal match, eighth-seeded Jimmy Bendeck and Julian Lenz of Baylor University pulled off the upset of the day as they ousted the top-seeded independent team of Bojan Szumanski and Krzysztof Kwinta 6-3, 6-4 to secure a spot in Sunday’s semifinals.

Bendeck and Lenz will face third-seeded Thomas Fawcett and Maciek Romanwicz of Stanford University, who breezed past Kyle Butters and Toby Mitchell of Boise State University, 6-0, 6-1. Their semifinal will be played at 9 a.m. (PST) on Sunday.

The top-seeded collegiate team of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe from Oklahoma State University avoided elimination in their quarterfinal match as they scored a thrilling 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-5 victory over seventh-seeded Max Cressy and Martin Redlicki of UCLA in two-hours and 52 minutes.

In an entertaining late-afternoon quarterfinal, which featured four UC Berkeley team members, Associate Head Coach Tyler Browne and JT Nishimura edged Filip Bergevi and Florian Lakat 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (7) in two-hours and 40 minutes.

Browne and Nishimura, who are seeded seventh, will take on Cash and Kadhe in the second semifinal on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. (PST). While early-morning showers are forecast for Sunday, tournament officials are expecting to start all matches on time and complete the event as scheduled.

Following the conclusion of the semifinals, the championship final will begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. (PST). The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club welcomes tennis spectators to view the tournament with free admission. On-site parking is available for a nominal fee.

Named “Club of the Year” for 2011 by the San Diego District Tennis Association and one of the “Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the World” by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s reputation as a top tennis destination started when it attracted its first major tournament – the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship in 1942. The tournament is one of the five-oldest tennis events in the world and the second oldest tennis event in the United States. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast-to-coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past winners of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship include Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston, John McEnroe, and many other world-class champions.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club will also be hosting the USTA National Hard Court Championships for Women’s 50-90 age groups and La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club Hard Court Tournament for Men’s 60-85 age groups on Monday, May 9, through Sunday, May 15.
