Novak Djokovic kept alive his chances of clinching a third straight BNP Paribas Masters title and a record sixth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown of 2015.

Top seed Djokovic did not have things all his own way in extending his winning streak to 19 matches (26-0 in sets) by knocking out No. 14 seed Gilles Simon 6-3, 7-5 on Thursday for a place in the quarter-finals. He will next face ninth seed 2008 titlist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or fifth seed and 2005 winner Tomas Berdych.

Djokovic was broken in the third game, but immediately bounced back and took a 4-2 lead courtesy of a second service break. The first seven games of the second set went against the server. Djokovic first served for the match at 5-4, only to be broken for a fifth time but regained his composure to win the next two games. The pair’s 10th meeting (Djokovic 9-1) lasted one hour and 37 minutes.

The 28-year-old Serbian is now 36-2 at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments this year and 75-4 overall in a career-best season. Simon, this year’s Open 13 champion (d. Monfils), finishes his campaign with a 43-24 match record.
