Croat and Aussie Both victorious on Day One in Shanghai / Young Loses Last Round Qualies, Why Qualies ?

Borna Coric provided an early candidate for best comeback of the 2015 Shanghai Rolex Masters, overcoming Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(5) on Sunday.

World No. 38 Coric, the highest-ranked teen in the Emirates ATP Rankings, dropped nine of 11 games after winning the first set. He would rally from a 3-1 deficit in the decider and again from 4-2 down in the ensuing tie-break to claim victory after two hours and one minute. The Croat saved four of seven break chances, setting a second-round clash against either countryman Marin Cilic or home hope Di Wu.

In other action, Bernard Tomic needed just 65 minutes to dismiss Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 7-6(3), riding five aces and 80 per cent total service points won. The Aussie did not face a break point in extending his FedEx ATP Head2Head edge to 3-1. Tomic will next square off against another Spaniard in seventh seed David Ferrer. It will be their third encounter this year, having split meetings in Acapulco and at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event in Indian Wells.

Players emerging from the qualifying draw included eighth seed Andrey Kuznetsov, who toppled top seed Donald Young 6-3, 6-1 and third seed Simone Bolelli, a 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-1 winner over Michal Przysiezny. Go Soeda mounted a stunning rally to defeat Hyeon Chung, clawing back from a 6-0, 3-0 deficit. Chung served for the match at 5-3 in the second set, holding two match points. No. 11 seed Michael Berrer, who owns a tour-leading seven successful qualifying campaigns in 2015, was denied 6-4, 7-6(4) by Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Lukasz Kubot, Yen-Hsun Lu and Nikoloz Basilashvili also progressed to the main draw. Kubot opens against Jack Sock, while Lu faces Dominic Thiem and Basilashvili clashes against 10th seed Gilles Simon.
