LATEST U.S. OPEN TENNIS NEWS - WAWRINKA: "I COULDN'T HAVE ASKED FOR MORE"

Stan Wawrinka concedes one overriding factor has contributed to a hasty dismissal in his US Open semi-final on Friday night. “Him, the way he’s playing,” the World No. 5 said of his countryman, Roger Federer.

In the 20th clash between the Swiss pair, Wawrinka had arrived having claimed only the third meeting in their FedEx Head2Head series on his way to the title at Roland Garros this year. Against his good friend on Friday night though– their first Slam showdown beyond the quarter-finals – it was a 92-minute rout. The 29 year old said he found the conditions quicker at night but would not use that as an excuse following the 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 result.

“It’s playing really fast,” Wawrinka said of Arthur Ashe Stadium. “(I) didn’t play my best game, didn’t serve well and everything. But basically it’s him, the way he’s playing.

“He’s moving really well, for sure. As I said before playing him, I saw him in Cincinnati, I think he’s quite fast on the court. He’s reading well the game, and so he’s trying really to stay on the line, not to go back; stay really aggressive. He’s serving really well, also. He’s serving better than I’ve ever seen him serve.

“For me tonight he’s getting more angles. It’s more tough to really serve and to make something from.”

Wawrinka had a tough night on serve. He landed just 49 per cent of his first serves and won just 58 per cent of those points. While still managing 25 winners, his 30 unforced errors didn’t help his cause. Still, it capped arguably Wawrinka’s best year in the majors and the Swiss No. 2 was able to reflect favourably on his run.

“Well, I need to see the whole picture,” he said. “I think it’s still a great result, amazing result from me, making semi-final again. I didn’t play really my best tennis. I didn’t play the way I wanted all tournament, but I (was) still in the semi-finals.

“So if I look (at) my result in Grand Slams this year I couldn’t ask for more. Make two semi-finals, one quarter-final, and one time, winner. It’s something amazing for me.”

In a warning for top seed Novak Djokovic – the man he beat in the final to win his second major at Roland Garros this year – Wawrinka said Federer was playing at a different level since his defeat in the Wimbledon decider. “(It) is the best that I saw him play since a few years, that’s for sure,” Wawrinka said. “But if you look at him – I think the second part from the year, after Wimbledon, he is starting already at the different level.

“He came back to Cincinnati at a completely different level. Here also. If you look at the first part (of the year) he was playing good, made the final at Wimbledon … If you look now, if (he) keeps this level, he’s going to be tough to beat.”
