Top seeds and World No. 1 Bob and Mike Bryan defeated first-time partners Daniel Nestor and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-6(5) 3-6, 10-6 to claim their 35th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title at the Rogers Cup on Sunday. The Bryans will share 1000 Emirates ATP Rankings points and $212,200, while their opponents will split 600 points and $103,890.

“We love to do what we do. But it’s even more special when you look up and see a lot of people in the seats. It’s a credit to the great Montreal fans,” said Mike Bryan. “Maybe they’re out there to see Nestor. Maybe some people were out to see us. It definitely makes for a more exciting atmosphere, more intense. Those are the moments you play for, big Masters Series finals, coming out to a packed stadium.”

All four players were bidding for their first title in Montreal. The Bryans won their 109th title as a team and secured a third title in as many weeks (Washington and Atlanta). Canada’s Nestor, playing the Rogers Cup for a record 27th straight year, has two titles and reached two finals – all in Toronto.

“I love Montreal and I loved playing in front of you today,” said the 42-year-old Nestor to the crowd during the on-court trophy ceremony. “I can’t promise I will be back in two years, but I will try my best.”

“It is always fun to play Daniel in Canada because he fills the stadium with lots of fans that love watching him play,” said Bob Bryan. “The energy from the crowd was fantastic. Today’s match hinged on a few points in the match tie-break and we feel great to sneak away with the title. We’re now looking forward to keeping this great run going through Cincinnati and the U.S. Open.”

The Bryans won the Rogers Cup for a fifth time, but all of their previous titles have come in Toronto (2002, 2006, 2010 and 2012). They were finalists in Montreal in 2011 (l. to Llodra/Zimonjic).

The eventual winners saved all three break points faced in the first set before taking it in a tie-break. Nestor/Roger-Vasselin stepped up their return game and broke the Americans twice in winning the second set, forcing the top seeds to contest a third Match Tie-break in as many matches this week. The teams fought to a 6-6 deadlock before the World No. 1s swept the next four points to claim a title in the 33rddifferent city of their careers.

“We were having some choice words with each other in that second set,” said Mike Bryan. “Just because we’ve been around each other so much, the losses are tougher, but the wins are sweeter. That’s why we’re still doing what we’re doing, because we love playing together as a team.

“Over the past two decades, we’ve had 57 hard fought battles against Daniel Nestor and today was no different. It feels great to win our first title in Montreal, especially since we had to do it winning three consecutive tough match tie-breaks. We’ll move on to the last two big events of the summer with a bunch of confidence and incentive to finish strong,” added Mike Bryan.
