ROGERS CUP TENNIS NEWS - DONALD YOUNG DEFEATS TOMAS BERDYCH  |

American Donald Young has sprung the biggest upset of this year’s Rogers Cup to date, seeing off Czech Tomas Berdych 7-6(5), 6-3 on Wednesday.

In their pair’s first meeting it was the 26-year-old who would prevail in Montreal after one hour and 40 minutes over the No. 5 seed for his first Top-10 victory of 2015. Having clinched the opening set tie-break 7-5, the World No. 79 did not face a break point in the second set on his way to victory.

“I haven’t played him before so it was a first time, I didn’t know what to expect. I know he hits big,” Young said. “I hadn’t started as well as I wanted to and I was missing a lot of shots but then I started to relax a little bit and with confidence from winning a few matches I felt pretty good towards the end.”

On what is traditionally the left-handed American’s strongest part of the season, Young was upbeat about his prospects for the remainder of the hard-court swing and leading into his home Grand Slam event at Flushing Meadows. He will next meet fellow qualifier Ernests Gulbis who took down Czech Lukas Rosol earlier.

“It’s big for me because the middle part (of the year) was awful so this part, to start going better, is good for me,” he said. “It’s in North America on hard courts, which is my favourite surface, I love playing in this part of the world, so I’m happy to do well.”

Young was joined in the third round by top-ranked countryman John Isner after the No. 16 seed defeated home favourite Vasek Pospisil 7-6(1), 4-6, 6-3.Pospisil conceded the opening set tie-break on a double fault 7/1 but buoyed on by his home crowd, the Canadian secured the break in the second set, then brought up set point with his fifth ace before levelling the match.

Isner, coming off a title run in Atlanta and a runner-up showing in Washington last week, landed the crucial break in the decider to go up 4-2 and would go on to bring up three match points with his 15th ace. He required only one to book his place in the Round of 16 against Nick Kyrgios.

“John played well, served well. He’s confident,” Pospisil said. “He’s just kind of in that period right now where he’s not thinking on the court. That’s kind of where every player wants to be. He’s won a lot of matches the last couple weeks. Credit to him for playing a good match.”
