Like so many tennis facilities, the Monte Carlo Country Club is determined to improve conditions for the ATP players during the week of their tournament which will take place next April.

For the second time in a decade, the players’ facilities will be considerably enlarged by the time the ATP Masters 1000 event comes around next year.

Francis Truchi, the long serving manager of the famous Country Club, told me that the new building, which will sit in front of the one created just a few years ago, will contain a much larger gym and workout area with more space for a lounge and restaurant.

When Open Tennis arrived in 1968, the players found themselves changing behind a curtain at the end of the long men’s locker room which runs the length of the top floor of the clubhouse which was built in 1928. It is still used by club members but the pros were quickly offered separate facilities in the basement. That, however, precluded enjoyment of one of the great glories of the club — the view over the sparkling Mediterranean with the foothills of the Alps rising to the back of the building.

The tournament has always been a favorite with players, amateur and professional alike, and the new construction seems destined to make their time in the Principality even more comfortable.
