Ladies Day And A Few Men of Note Too – Day 2 from Global Chick @ Wimbledon 2015

It was all about the ladies at the start of the day, but goodness me, if you’d blinked you missed it. Petra Kvitova has been one of our ones to watch. Not only because she battered the balls to fluff last year on the lawns of SW19 and was so humbling still, despite picking up her second title. No, because she has found a way to rise above exhaustion by taking two months off, and even earning the admiration of Serena Williams who remarked that she felt it had been a very brave thing to do in a season.

We were so looking forward to bringing you her journey in Eastbourne, as we dodged the seagulls, but a cold laid her low and she had to withdraw, which was a real shame for them and for us. But any thoughts of sniffles were well and truly forgotten as she blew through Kiki Bertens like a sneeze on a mission.

With her parents on a flying visit for the next three days, their daughter was on court for just 35 minutes, which will give them plenty of time to go enjoy some scones and jam at the Wingfield Restaurant.

One thing was for sure – she wasn’t planning on doing any more today!

“I’m glad how I played today. I don’t think I need any more, like, practice today. I have a practice tomorrow. I think it’s just fine. To relax again after the sickness I had, it’s still in a good way.”

Roger Federer started his quest in fine coasting form, as he breezed past Damir Dzumhur (easy for you to type!). It took him just 67 minutes of court time to set himself on the good ship Eighth-Title-Quest, even though at times Dzumhur managed to pass him and out volley him. Twice. But Centre Court is a tricky beast. Because while the court dimensions are same, whether it be SW19 or an ATP 250 in a less salubrious postcode, the location can get to players.

Also factor in the sheer volume of Federer fans who get themselves tickets for those first few days – they could lift the roof, whether it is open or closed.

He said, after the match: “I’m aware of it. But I think it’s also his first time on Centre Court. I’m sure in some crazy way he’s also enjoying himself, can look back and say I played on Centre. It’s where you want to play. So I’m more focused on what I’m trying to do, trying to win the match.

“Back in the day maybe I would not be as ruthless as today. But now it’s trying to focus on what I need to do. The score, it is what it is. I don’t think it really matters at the end of the day what the scoreline is. For me, it’s about playing the tournament, the ball that’s coming from my opponent.”

For many, Centre Court is still very much the Court of King Roger… certainly in the first week.

But of course, let’s jump the queue (how very un-British) and look at he of the wiry-hair-and-in-need-of-a-haircut Andy Murray. Perhaps one of our favourite quotes of the day, as the Brit decided to go for a bit of a deviation, was ‘ANDY MURRAY SCENIC ROUTE ALERT.’ But here’s the thing. While his fans tend to wring their hands in unproductive dismay at the unfairness of the draw because he needs to face players with two arms and two legs, Murray will play anyone who’s over the net from him. Do people honestly think he wants to walk it? Sure he might wish for an easier first week, but in the second week it is never going to be easy. If he wins it again, he will earn it and so it should be.

Of course we also had another goodly share of scattered seeds today – Brit No. 1 (the OTHER one) Heather Watson battled past the 32nd seed Caroline Garcia. Apart from the obvious British/home team hyperbole, this was a fantastic win for Watson, having lost some key tough matches. She faces Daniela Hantuchova in potentially another very winnable match, and set up a potential third round with Serena Williams.

But we bid farewell to last year’s finalist Eugenie Bouchard whose struggles continue. Perhaps out of the Top 20, where she is bound to end up, and out of the first half of the year public eye, she can re-find herself.

While we are on the subject, albeit with a dickey ankle, Simona Halep stumbled out of another Slam where we might have expected her to shine.

On that note – we roll around now to the Round two, and we look forward to watching Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Novak Djokovic once more. Chin-chin.
