Global Chick, The Seagulls And The Third Round

The sun may have been shining, but it was not long before the first dark clouds of the day began to gather. Thankfully not on the seagulls and the tennis watching public but on last year’s Wimbledon finalist Genie Bouchard.

What had seemed to be a turnaround for the Canadian with a win on Tuesday swiftly became another footnote in the stats as Swiss teen, and the baby of the draw at Eastbourne, became the latest to mark up a ‘W’.

The first set had been competitive, with Bencic just sneaking a decisive break before sealing the first set. But when she pulled ahead at the start of the second set for a 3-0 lead, Bouchard called the trainer at the first sit-down, before retiring with an abdominal strain.

She admitted that the pain had started at the end of the first set, and it sure showed as Bencic ran away with every point in the three games of the second set, but let’s give credit where it’s due – Bouchard was perhaps the most pragmatic we’ve seen her in press since Indian Wells. In the Californian desert she enjoyed her best run outside of reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals before her worrying turn of form.

She said: She explained: “During the first set, you know, I was serving at a much slower pace than even just yesterday, and I kept trying and trying. I mean, at the end it was hard for me to put a serve in just because I felt that pain a little bit. I thought it would be better to stop.

“I’m going to play [Wimbledon] no matter what, even if I’m on one leg (smiling). I will take a few days off from serving and give it a little break and see how it goes.”

Meanwhile the Brits were cracking out the Pimms in celebration as home girl Johanna Konta notched up yet another Top 100 win. With each successive win, we see a little more of her personality, and just the day before Heather Watson said she knew that Konta had great tennis in her, and was thrilled it was coming to the fore now.

Konta has, up until now anyway, been politely measured in press but with the exhilaration of that win and having her folks here she admitted that part of her success has been down to trying to be very calm on court as opposed to being a lot more highly strung (or so her family and boyfriend might think!).

“For me, it’s been a lot of work on being more relaxed and being more stress‑free, and obviously that has an effect on how my muscles react. I’m not as tense, and obviously the more fluid you are, the looser you are, the less likely you’re going to get injuries from stress‑related things.

“You know, I’m just really happy with the place I’m in and I’m just enjoying every situation, good or bad. Out there it wasn’t all roses. I mean, there was a lot of ups and downs. I feel that I’m doing a really good job with enjoying every situation I’m in.”

Alas there will be no Watson to get the crowd waving their bunting about the place. She bowed out to Sloane Stephens as they met for the third time this year.

Watson said: “I wasn’t happy with my performance today. I just felt that I never got going at all. I felt quite slow to the ball and slow reacting and just slow with my mind.

“I still felt I had chances to get in the match. I had a lot of games, especially on my serve, where I was up and I had points to close the game and I just let it slip away. Sloane was very solid. She played great. She didn’t allow me to get back in, and I felt from the first ball she was pushing me on the back foot.”

Meanwhile we continue to stare suspiciously at the seagulls. Well… wouldn’t you?
