Giant-killing Frenchwoman Kristina Mladenovic will be eyeing another big name scalp when she takes on Karolina Pliskova in the first of Saturday’s Aegon Classic Birmingham semi-finals. Mladenovic, who is unseeded, has already knocked out seeds Eugenie Bouchard, Barbora Strycova and Simone Halep, takes on World No.12 Karolina Pliskova at midday on the Ann Jones Centre court.

Mladenovic, 22, is relishing being in the last four of such a prestigious tournament. “This is the semi-finals of a WTA Premier event so for sure I’m expecting a tough match,” she said. “I’m just enjoying actually having these beautiful wins playing on those nice courts, stadiums, big stages, with all these top players. This is somewhere where I always dreamed to be one day.”

In Saturday’s other semi-final, World No.10 Angelique Kerber will take on former Wimbledon finalist Sabine Lisicki in an all-German centre court battle. Kerber says she is enjoying her week so far at the Edgbaston Priory Club. “The crowd, it’s amazing,” she said. “I love to play here on the centre court. I mean, the fans are so nice and supporting you. So it’s always nice to play in front of so many guys that are supporting you.”

Lisicki, who lifted the Maud Watson trophy in 2011, is in the only remaining former Aegon Classic champion left in the draw.

“I feel good,” said Lisicki.” I’m looking forward to having fun and enjoying myself on the court. So it’s nice to be back here in Birmingham. I feel the support from the crowd. It is special to come back.”

Friday proved to be a near sell-out day for the tournament and capped a week where ticket sales are more than 25 percent up on last year’s figures. Bumper crowds are expected for the final weekend, although a limited number of tickets are still available via the link below or from the Box Office on the day.
