The Queen’s Club

Stan Stunned By Anderson

The recently crowned French Open champion Stan Wawrinka was knocked out of the Aegon Championships on Wednesday by Kevin Anderson. The South African fired down 22 aces to triumph 7-6(4) 7-6(11), finally converting his sixth match point in the second set tiebreak. It was Anderson’s fourth successive victory against Wawrinka.

‘I feel the way I play today, it suits the matchup quite well,’ said Anderson. ‘I definitely tried to come in a bit especially off my serves, trying to take away his block return a little bit. When he has time from the baseline, he’s very dangerous. I try to take time away from him.’

Anderson will next play Guillermo Garcia Lopez after the veteran Spaniard overcame Nadal’s conqueror Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets in the final singles match of the day on centre court.

Also through to Friday’s quarter finals is Gilles Simon, the seventh seeded Frenchman having comfortably beaten Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-4 6-2. His opponent in the last eight will be Milos Raonic, who recovered from losing the second set to beat Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1.

Wednesday’s schedule also featured Britain’s Andy Murray making a rare doubles appearance alongside his Davis Cup teammate Dominic Inglot. The pair were beaten by the top seeds and defending champions, Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares, in two tight sets on court one.

Thursday will see Murray return to singles action against Fernando Verdasco. The Briton has a commanding 10-1 lead in their head-to-head but the left-handed Spaniard did have a 2 sets to love advantage at Wimbledon in 2013, before Murray came back to win in 5. That clash is scheduled as the third match on centre court.

Elsewhere on Thursday, the defending champion Grigor Dimitrov is up against Gilles Muller of Luxembourg, Marin Cilic faces Viktor Troicki and John Isner takes on last year’s finalist at The Queen’s Club Feliciano Lopez.
