BOUCHARD RELISHES BIRMINGHAM CHALLENGE

Eugenie Bouchard begins her 2015 Aegon Classic Birmingham campaign on Wednesday as part of another star-studded order of play at the Edgbaston Priory Club.

“The tournament has improved a lot since the last time I was here in 2013 so that’s always nice to see,” said Bouchard, who takes on Kristina Mladenovic. “The grass courts are unbelievable. It’s always nice to come to England where they, first of all, have a passion for tennis and also know how to take care of grass courts. There is just this passion for it here and it’s nice to be in that atmosphere.”

Elsewhere on what promises to be a bumper day for ticket-holders, defending Aegon Classic Birmingham champion Ana Ivanovic begins her bid for back-to-back titles when she takes on Portuguese qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito. Sabine Lisicki and Swiss youngster Belinda Bencic follow Bouchard and de Brito on to the Ann Jones Centre Court before Victoria Azarenka takes on Zarina Dyas.

Azarenka was pushed hard in her opening match against Vavara Lepchenko on Tuesday before coming through with a 7‑6, 6‑4 win. “I just tried to stay positive as much as possible and try to fight through it. I think that was one thing that I’ve done really well today, is fighting those challenges,” said Azarenka.

British No.2 Johanna Konta should enjoy plenty of support when she takes on sixth seed Karolina Pliskova in her second round match on Wednesday. Konta will be hoping to build on her impressive opening win over Aija Tomjanovic. She is the last British player left in singles after Tuesday’s defeats to Heather Watson and Naomi Broady.
