Entries are currently being accepted for one of the Southland’s most unique tennis events as the third annual MAK Games 2015 will once again benefit the MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House.

Up to 32 doubles teams will compete for the MAK Cup won last year by artist Gunner Fox and writer Benjamin Weissman with the semifinals and final taking place on July 18 on the famous infinity court designed by Duncan Nicholson at the Sheats-Goldstein Residence (John Lautner, 1963), home of entrepreneur and sports enthusiast James Goldstein.

The cost to play in the event deemed by one publication as “one of the most aesthetically rewarding events in town,” is a $500 registration fee for each doubles team and must be submitted by May 20. To sign up, go to: makgames.org/signup.

All proceeds from MAK Games 2015 benefit the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, a non-profit arts organization that presents contemporary art and architecture programming while stewarding three landmarks of modern architecture.

“It’s amazing to see how many people in the cultural sphere are intensely committed to tennis, and how many tennis players game to play for the MAK Center,” said Kimberli Meyer, director of the MAK Center. “I’m really looking forward to this year, it promises to be better than ever.”

Once again this year, guests to the event will enjoy cocktails, a BBQ, music, and tours of the house. All are welcome and players in 2014 included a diverse group of artists, architects, writers, musicians, actors, directors, curators, and other cultural figures.

Key dates:

  • May 20 is the registration deadline.
  • Between May 21 and June 21, rounds one and two will be played, to be scheduled by participating teams at a convenient time and place.
  • On June 28, the quarterfinals will take place at a private residence in Malibu.

Last year, tennis pros Lester Cook and Nicole Gibbs took part in the Pro-Am, along with “Justified” star Timothy Olyphant and musician Gavin Rossdale. Former ATP Pro and current Tennis Channel Host Justin Gimelstob was the emcee for the event.

“I think it makes perfect sense to merge something like architecture and tennis together and at this venue, it just represents how awesome and unique that can be,” said Gibbs, a current WTA Touring pro and the 2013 NCAA singles champion from Stanford.

“I love to see talented people engage in the sport of tennis,” said the former UCLA All-American Gimelstob. “It’s really neat to see these two worlds intersecting.”

The 2014 sponsors included: Brooks Brothers and Vanity Fair, The Agency, H.L. James, L.A. Tennis Ladder, Taslimi Construction, Baby Blues, Liquid I.V., Meiomi, Selvarey, Stiegl, Vienna Tourist Board.

About the MAK Center for Art and Architecture

Since its founding in 1994, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House has been making a unique contribution to the artistic and cultural landscape of Los Angeles. Offering a year-round schedule of exhibitions and events, the MAK Center presents programming that challenges conventional notions of architectural space and relationships between the creative arts. It is headquartered in the landmark Schindler House (R.M. Schindler, 1922) in West Hollywood; operates a residency program and exhibition space at the Mackey Apartments (R.M. Schindler, 1939) and runs more intimate programming at the Fitzpatrick-Leland House (R.M. Schindler, 1936) in Los Angeles. The MAK Center is the California satellite of the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art in Vienna, and works in cooperation with the Friends of the Schindler House. Unique in its role as a constellation of historic architectural sites and contemporary exhibition spaces, the MAK Center develops local, national, and international projects exploring the intersection of art and architecture. It seeks out and supports projects that test disciplinary boundaries. Acting as a cultural think tank for current issues, the MAK Center encourages exploration of practical and theoretical ideas in art and architecture by engaging the center’s places, spaces, and histories. Its programming includes exhibitions, lectures, symposia, discussions, performances, music series, publication projects, salons, architecture tours, and new work commissions. It collaborates frequently with guest curators, artists and architects.
