The Demise of Disco Daisy, and other stories on Day 2 from Roland Garros.

After the stylish black of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Ana Ivanovic, obviously harnessing their inner Roland Garros ball-kid (also all dressed in black this year), not to mention Roger Federer’s neon shorts, it was time for 14th seed Agnieszka Radwanska to break out this year’s disco-dress – a fabulous sparkly number to hopefully kick-start her rediscovery.

Alas, it was not to be as she was hopelessly outclassed in the first set by Annika Beck in the first set, who made sure she wrought a fair measure of revenge for having been double-bagelled her in Indian Wells last year. It took Radwanska until the fifth game to even find the scoreboard (and we don’t mean by sailing a forehand or backhand long into it).

Things picked up for her in the second set, but the momentum was soon back with the German who broke early again, and although Radwanska broke straight back that was the last glimpse of brilliance (dress nothwithstanding) from the Pole.

We got our first sighting of a defending champion today, as a decidedly out-of-sorts sounding Maria Sharapova kicked off her title defence with a win. Sporting a very French looking stripey top, and all but missing a beret, it looked like it was hard work for a 6-2 6-4 win. And today’s “boo-gate” was directed at their 2014 darling, who declined to do an on-court post-match interview, struggling with a nasty cough throughout her match.

It was a tricky day for British journos as all five Brits in the main draw were in action today. New Brit on the block Aljaz Bedene had a flurry of activity to edge back a set against newly crowned Nice champion Dominic Thiem, but sadly bowed out. The schedulers sure know how to torment us Brits. Both No. 1s were in action at the same time as Heather Watson tackled almost annual French wildcard Mathilde Johansson, while Andy Murray also joined the “look like a ball kid” brigade in his all black gear that makes us yearn for the kind of physique that can carry off Under Armour wear. They were joined in the next round by next-generationer Kyle Edmund. This kid is so grounded, works out on occasion as part of Murray’s training block and really deserved his five set over home-crowd favourite Stephane Robert.

It was a good day for the rest of the French home-boys, with both Gael Monfils and Gilles Simon giving the crowd some entertainment with four set wins over compatriots. Simon has also opted for the black look while Monfils continues to rock his sleep suit set, thankfully ditching the matching shorts for his Wimbledon whites. Obviously he didn’t get Federer’s memo that white is so last-millennia for SW19.

Our pick, though for day was a breezy battle between Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens. In a part of the draw that is stacked more than a house of cards that had a date with a tube of superglue, the resurgent pair battled through a competitive first set in cold and windy conditions. It might be spring/summer but at times Europe fails to get the memo.

This was one of those matches that you wished both could advance from, but the tennis gods are cruel, people. It was Stephens who put in a sterling performance to set up a meeting with Britain’s Heather Watson, in a stacked quarter which also includes World No. 1 Serena Williams. She will be kicking off her campaign as the last act on Chatrier court.

In fact that will be the hottest ticket in town, as men’s defending champion Rafael Nadal will be running the gauntlet after perhaps his rockiest route to the French Open since he made his glittering debut in 2005. Hot on his heels will be Novak Djokovic. And it’s only Day Three or Two and a Half… well you know what I mean!

À demain, tous les mondes.
