TOP SEED KARWASKY REACHES 60 AND OVER QUARTERFINALS

AT USTA NATIONAL SENIOR WOMEN’S HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Defending Champion Ros Nideffer Advances to Quarterfinals in 50 and Over Division

Tina Karwasky of Glendale, Calif., is the number one-ranked player in the country in the 60 and over division. The soft-spoken 62-year-old has dominated the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, winning the 60s singles title for the last three consecutive years.

After opening this year’s tournament with an impressive first-round win, Karwasky played her second-round match on Tuesday in gusty conditions on Court No. 2 against unseeded Penne Burgess of Carson City, Nev.

The top-seed and three-time defending champion got off to a slow start, losing the first two games to start the match. However, Karwasky came back to reel off 12 straight games to eliminate Burgess, 6-2, 6-0, and advance to the 60s quarterfinals.

“It was pretty breezy. It was tough. I was down 0-2 in the first set. I just had to get the ball in the court and get some rhythm going,” said Karwasky, a retired tennis coach. “I had to figure out my opponent. I’m slow at that sometimes.”

Karwasky will play her quarterfinal match against fifth-seeded Carol Gay of San Diego on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. (PDT).

In other tournament action, Ros Nideffer, the top seed and defending champion in the 50s singles division, dropped her serve in the opening game of her second round match on Court No. 1, but rebounded to score an impressive 6-2, 6-0, victory over unseeded Tai Sisson of San Dimas, Calif.

The 54-year-old Nideffer, a resident of the Rancho Bernardo community in San Diego, is a former touring tennis professional who reached a career-high No. 15 in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) singles rankings in 1990.

Nideffer will face fifth-seeded Eleanor Hammargren of San Clemente, Calif., in a quarterfinal match scheduled for 9:30 a.m. (PDT) on Wednesday.

The senior women’s tennis event features singles and doubles in the 50 and over, 60 and over, 70 and over, 80 and over, and 90 and over age divisions. The tournament attracts the best players from across the country, making the tournament field of competitors the strongest in the nation in each age division.

Singles and doubles finals in each women’s division will be played on Saturday, May 16. The tournament schedule on Sunday, May 17 will feature consolation finals.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s 43rd Annual Spring Senior Championships for men is also being played this week in conjunction with the women’s events. Although the men’s events are not national championships, they feature many senior players who regularly compete in national tournaments.

The men’s events include singles and doubles for 60 and over, 65 and over, 70 and over, 75 and over, 80 and over, and 85 and over age groups. Total participation for both the men’s and women’s tournaments is expected to be 300-plus players.

The La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club began each of these events in the late 1980s and has hosted them each year since then. Designated one of the Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the world by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club’s reputation as a top tennis destination started in 1942 when it attracted its first major tournament, the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship.
