NIDEFFER ELIMINATES HAMMARGREN TO ADVANCE AT USTA

NATIONAL SENIOR WOMEN’S HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS

50s Semifinals Set for 9:30 a.m. (PDT) Thursday at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

Defending champion and top seed Ros Nideffer of San Diego (Rancho Bernardo) got past fifth-seeded Eleanor Hammargren of San Clemente, 6-3, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals of the USTA National Senior Women’s Hard Court Championships.

Nideffer, who has captured the 50s singles title twice in the last three years, took control early in the first set of her quarterfinal match as she broke Hammargren in the first game and went on to build a 3-1 lead. Later with a 5-3 advantage, Nideffer broke serve again to wrap up the first set, which took exactly one hour.

In the second set, Nideffer scored her third service break of the match in the second game and then held serve for a 3-0 lead. However, Hammargren, who won last year’s consolation singles title, rallied as she won the next three games to level the second set at 3-3.

Nideffer, a former two-time Wimbledon singles quarterfinalist who was once ranked as high as No. 15 in the world, regained her focus and came back to win the final three games, serving out the final game of the match at love.

“It was a little frustrating actually. I didn’t feel like I was playing that well. I wasn’t moving to the ball and allowing it to come to me. I wasn’t playing as aggressively as I would have liked,” Nideffer said after her straight-set victory.

“My serve was a little better than it has been, that’s one positive. Another positive was when I pulled it out when she came back after (I) was up 3-0,” Nideffer added. “I pulled it together for those three games. She played well.”

In her semifinal match, Nideffer will face fourth-seeded Tracy Houk of Montara, Calif., on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. (PDT). Houk, who has reached the 50s singles final for the last four consecutive years, blanked fifth-seeded Mariana Hollman of Walkertown, N.C., 6-0, 6-0, in the quarterfinals.

The other 50s singles semifinal, which is also scheduled for 9:30 a.m. (PDT), will pit second-seeded Frances Chandler of Jackson, Tenn., versus fifth-seeded Judy Newman of Scotts Valley, Calif.

Chandler advanced to the semifinals as she cruised past fifth-seeded Anna Zimmermann of Indianapolis, Ind., 6-1, 6-1, while Newman outlasted third-seeded Erika Smith of Oakland, Calif., 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, in a quarterfinal match that took two hours and 45 minutes.

The senior women’s tennis event features singles and doubles in the 50 and over, 60 and over, 70 and over, 80 and over, and 90 and over age divisions. The tournament attracts the best players from across the country, making the tournament field of competitors the strongest in the nation in each age division.

Singles and doubles finals in each women’s division will be played on Saturday, May 16. The tournament schedule on Sunday, May 17 will feature consolation finals.
