ANDY MURRAY BEGINS MUNICH TITLE QUEST

Andy Murray began his quest for a spot in his first ATP World Tour clay-court final on Thursday.

 

The top seed saved all six break points he faced to beat qualifier Mischa Zverev 6-2, 6-2 in 75 minutes for a place in the BMW Open by FWU AG quarter-finals.

“I thought I started off the match well today and played pretty well,” said Murray.

 

Murray, who improved to 22-5 on the year, will next challenge Lukas Rosol.

 

Rosol beat Sergiy Stakhovsky for the first time in their third meeting, 7-5, 6-2 over 86 minutes.

 

Dominic Thiem knocked out last year’s finalist, eighth seed Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 6-0 in 57 minutes.

 

“For sure it was one of my best matches so far this year,” said Thiem. “I stayed focus from the first to last point. It is really good news for Austrian tennis [to play against Gerald]. It’s going to be interesting.”

 

Gerald Melzer was leading Pablo Andujar, last week’s Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell finalist, 4-1 when his Spanish opponent retired due to a right hip injury after 27 minutes of play.
