GLOBAL CHICK REPORTS FROM INDIAN WELLS & SHE IS ALSO CHECKING THE SAN ANDREAS FAULT  |

As you were, good citizens of tennis

Now we have a tournament on our hands! Galloping into the first Sunday, and sitting in a local diner wondering why so many people are in there when this chick has been used to peace and quiet with her bizarre combinations of pancakes and bacon, all around there is excited chatter.

“Did you see what happened when Serena came out?”

“Wow Djokovic was quick out there!”

We’re back in tennis mode, and Saturday gave us quite a treat in terms of Victoria Azarenka’s querying of Nike fashion, (or otherwise): I do have conversations with Nike, but they have their vision, and I think they are doing pretty good job. This year it’s a little bit of mismatching kind of thing, so they have done a great job.

“I was actually asking them ‘How come my shoes and my outfit doesn’t match at all?’ And they said, You know what? Actually, it’s not supposed to. I said, Oh, okay. Well then it’s A‑plus.

“But it’s fun, you know, I think to see a lot of colors. I like the white. I like the orange. I think I’m getting dressed as every kind of fruit this year – It was a lemon in Australia; now it’s orange. We will see.”

It was great to see Madison Keys back out on the court, although many seemed to be more of a dither about Lindsay Davenport’s first on-court coaching foray, which earned her a round of applause. The injury that has kept her off the tour since her great run to the Australian Open semi-finals is healed and Keys is certainly one of our ones to watch.

Keys said: “She jokingly told me to flip the coin to decide if John or her would go out there, and I actually flipped a coin. So that’s how we decided. I think it will change depending on if she has to go straight to the booth afterwards. I think she did a good job. She will probably be on court a couple more times.”

Now no Global Chick is going to come out to California and not spend some time gallivanting around the place to do a little shopping and sightseeing, so let’s turn our mind to the other fun thing during a tournament – the big/potential upsets.

We bid farewell to Marin Cilic, who defending his participating in the IPTL despite having struggled at the end of the year with an injury, but really it probably was not as much of a surprise. He still insists he want to play doubles with Juan Martin Del Potro, who held off making his singles come-back here. We just hope the trainer is on standby.

On the women’s side, Simona Halep is possibly the big name on the cards to go. Sadly with a bereavement just before the tournament started, she could be forgiven for having her mind elsewhere, but she did claw her way back from a set down to Daria Gavrilova so perhaps don’t rule her out just yet.

Which brings us back to Azarenka for our potential upset watch. While she is making her way back up the rankings, and as much as the players insist “one match at a time” and “I never look ahead in the draw” surely right now she is the one name every high seed dreads in the early rounds.

Maria Sharapova looked as dominant as she always does in her first match, but while Azarenka leads their head to head 7-6, Sharapova has had the upper hand in their last two meetings, and they haven’t met before the quarter-final stages since 2009 in Beijing and this will be a solid test of where the Belarusian is in terms of fitness and match sharps.

Let’s hope the organisers think that two former World No. 1s and Slam champions might warrant an outing on Stadium 1.

Now, where’s that suncream and shopping list?
