The Davis Cup effect: Doubles trouble, or double the value for the money ? By global chick.

One might argue that the only thing in the air in Glasgow (certainly on Saturday) was the wind and the rain, and rather a lot of it!

But once more we were treated to The Davis Cup Effect ™! While all around were planning on dinner reservations and plotting where we could go for pre-dinner aperitifs the Glasgow crowd lifted their valiant warriors to great heights and once more we were treated to a great comeback that almost closed the tie out and would have left a lot of us twiddling our thumbs waiting for the late flights home.

The Bryan’s played a great tactical game – it did not hurt that Jamie Murray struggled to get his eye on his serve, but they admitted afterwards that they had not targeted him at the net, preferring to aim their volleys at the walking tree that is Dom Inglot.

We certainly have had our money’s worth so far. Four sets from Murray junior was awfully obliging to give us four sets to start the afternoon, and James Ward carried on the tradition of lengthy nail -biters.

We have now agreed never to use the words “could be an early finish” ever in our lives again, as we were treated to some great doubles. When you actually have doubles specialists plying their trade, it really makes you want to rant and rail about how we don’t see enough doubles shown on TV. Its fast moving, and some breathtaking rallies were in store for us on Saturday.

As a side observation, and of course we’ll see what the effect it on Sunday, it was fascinating watching the teams interact. The British team do a lot of jumping up and down, fist pumping and all round whooping and hollering, whereas the US team sat resolute in the knowledge that the best doubles team in the world would most likely come through with no issues.

In a way it is heaps better for the sport that Saturday was a worthy five set victory with just the smallest margin between the teams. It also goes to reinforce the strength in depth that Britain has in the doubles.

Of course, dinner plans… that was another matter.
