IT'S COLD IN SCOTLAND BUT WILL THE USA FIND IT EVEN COLDER ? BY GLOBAL CHICK  |

Let’s face it, when one touches down at the airport and sees snow covered mountains (the Scottish call them hills probably) it looks all lovely. Until you head out and wait for a cab! Here’s the Global Chick, in Glasgow for the Davis Cup World Group tie between Great Britain and the USA.

Let’s look on the bright side. We are in an arena. A proper arena. That’s not to say previous outings north of the border at Braehead (the word even *looks* Scottish, for heaven’s sake!) were not but it was in the middle of a shopping centre. Well that was handy for buying things but it did feel like we were in a laser-quest arena.

This is a proper arena! That being said it’s big and so far it has been cold. But that will all change when it is filled to capacity with over 7000 screaming Davis Cup fans. These are no normal fans, oh no. These are fans who make noise, and a lot of it. They have those awfully irritating plastic things you hit together. They give kids… KIDS… bull-horns.

And unlike the tournaments we spend our lives at, you have the team pulling together. From the schoolboy giggles of the British team sharing private jokes and knowing looks while the poor harassed (and probably quite chilly) members of the press tried to interview them, to the bemused looks of the US team on Wednesday when Team Captain Jim Courier was asked about golf (a lot). From the almost underplayed home side to the optimistic visitors. That was all a prelude to a loud, noisy, raucous dream (and perhaps for the losing side a nightmare).

It all starts on Friday, and the thrill is almost always the often-decisive doubles and boy do we have a doozy. We *could* see the Murray’s versus the Bryan’s-Squared. But Team GB were being very coy, and telling us it would be “unlikely” to see Murray junior play alongside Murray senior.

But apart from watching Murray and Isner go at it on Sunday, hands up who wouldn’t want to watch the ultimate in sibling rivalry? Either way, it is a chance for Donald Young to prove that his recent performances make him a worthy pick, and for James Ward to once again prove just how much he lifts his game when playing for Britain.

As Jim Courier said: “There’s something beautiful for a player to be able to silence a crowd with a shot if you’re the foreign player and I’m sure Andy and James experienced that in San Diego with us last year, and we’d like to experience it here and there’s something magnificent about that and there’s obviously something incredible when you get the crowd behind you and you’re playing at home. It’s a very different feeling for sure but there’s beauty in both sides.”

So c’mere kid, give me that bull-horn, and let’s kick the Davis Cup off in style (but also perhaps with a toastie scarf and a pair of gloves).
