FULL SCHEDULE OF MATCHES TO BE PLAYED ON THURSDAY AT USTA NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS FOLLOWING WEDNESDAY’S RAIN-OUT AT LA JOLLA BEACH & TENNIS CLUB

Tribute Set for Tennis Legend Dodo Cheney During Friday’s Player Reception at LJB&TC

Light, steady rain continued throughout the day at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, forcing tournament officials to postpone matches at the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships. Thursday’s matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. (PST), weather permitting.

According to Tournament Referee Ralph Anderson, third and fourth round matches will be played in the men’s main draw on Thursday, while the women’s draw will feature second round matches. All of Thursday’s matches will be played using a Match Tiebreak in lieu of a third set.

“Despite the rain and postponements, we are going to make every effort possible to get the tournament back on schedule so we can complete the event this weekend,” Anderson said.

A special tribute to tennis legend Dorothy “Dodo” Bundy Cheney, who passed away on November 23 at the age of 98, will take place during a reception for tournament players on Friday evening at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

In 1938, Cheney became the first American woman to capture the Australian Championships. During her long celebrated tennis career, Cheney, who played into her 90s, amassed over 390 USTA national titles, winning many of them at the LJB&TC.

While competing in the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championships, Cheney captured the women’s singles title an astonishing 13 straight times from 1957 to 1969. She also won the women’s doubles crown on 9 occasions with six different partners. In addition, Cheney won five Mixed Doubles titles, including the 1971 championship, when she teamed with Bobby Riggs.

Cheney was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I., in 2004.

“Dodo Cheney was one of the great champions in tennis on and off the court. She was an amazing competitor and a player who showed us that tennis is truly a sport of a lifetime,” said Tournament Director Bill Kellogg. “We are looking forward to honoring her with this special tribute on Friday.”

The USTA National Father & Son and Grandfather & Grandson Hard Court Doubles Championships are scheduled to begin on Friday, December 5, with matches concluding Sunday, December 7. The Father and Son championship has been held continuously at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club since 1959, and attracts the top father and son tennis teams in the U.S. The Grandfather/Grandson Championship is a relatively new competitive division that began at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club in 2003.

The starting times for the USTA National Hard Court Championships are as follows:

8 a.m. — Wednesday, Dec. 3 through Friday, Dec. 5

9 a.m. – Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 7
