FULL SLATE OF MATCHES SCHEDULED FOR WEDNESDAY AT UNITED STATES

TENNIS ASSOCIATION NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Persistent rain throughout the day washed out all but one main draw singles match at the USTA National 40 Hard Court Championship at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

With men’s third-round and women’s second-round matches scheduled, play began at 8 a.m. (PST), but rain began to fall shortly before 9 a.m. and play was suspended. Play resumed at 1:30 p.m., but at approximately 2:20 p.m., matches were suspended again due to rain.

At 3:30 p.m., all matches were postponed for the day and rescheduled for Wednesday, with play scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.

Top-seeded Oren Motevassel of San Jose, Calif., playing on Court No. 1, won the first set 6-0, in his third-round match against Misha Yevtich of Las Vegas before play was suspended for the day. Their match will resume on Wednesday morning. Motevassel is a two-time tournament singles champion, having won the title in 2011 and 2012.

In other matches scheduled for Wednesday, defending champion and second seed Tony Bujan of Tustin, Calif., will face unseeded Leonardo Goldstein of San Diego in a third-round match. The 44-year-old Bujan, a left-hander, is a tennis teaching professional, an instructor and training coach in San Clemente, Calif.

Third-seeded Jeff Tarango, the tournament singles champion in 2010, is scheduled to take on unseeded Jawad Bisharat of La Jolla, Calif., in a third-round encounter. The 46-year-old Tarango, a former touring professional, was ranked as high as No. 42 in the world in singles and No. 10 in doubles during his career on the ATP World Tour.

In the Women’s 40 draw, top-seeded Jennifer Dawson of Carlsbad, Calif., will play her second round match against unseeded Mariko Atoji of San Diego. Dawson, a local teaching professional, is a former tournament champion, winning the 2011 championship.
