TOP MEN’S SEEDS ADVANCE TO THIRD ROUND ON OPENING DAY OF USTA

NATIONAL 40 HARD COURT CHAMPIONSHIPS AT LA JOLLA BEACH & TENNIS CLUB

Top Women’s Seed Jennifer Dawson Set to Play Opening Match Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. (PST)

After receiving first-round byes, the top three men’s seeds all scored impressive straight-set, second-round victories on opening day of the United States Tennis Association National 40 Hard Court Championships at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Top seed Oren Motevassel of San Jose, Calif., wasted little time in dispatching unseeded Steve Heroux of Hidden Hills, Calif., 6-1, 6-0. Motevassel, the tournament champion in 2011 and 2012, will face unseeded Misha Yevtich of Las Vegas in a third-round match at 9 a.m. (PST) on Tuesday.

Defending champion and second seed Tony Bujan of Tustin, Calif., advanced to the third round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over unseeded Brian Matek of Placentia, Calif. Bujan will play the winner of a Monday evening second-round match between John Sellars of Dallas and Leonardo Goldstein of San Diego on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. (PST).

“It feels good to be back. I love playing here. It’s like a vacation, a resort destination. It’s great,” Bujan said following his second round victory. “It’s a really tough draw this year. There are a lot more players to play through. It’s going to be tougher to win.”

Third-seeded Jeff Tarango also reached the third-round as the former touring tennis professional cruised past unseeded George Espinosa of Bonita, Calif., 6-1, 6-2 in a second-round match. Tarango, the tournament singles champion in 2010, will play unseeded Jawad Bisharat of La Jolla, Calif., on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

Jennifer Dawson of Carlsbad, Calif., the women’s singles top seed, received a first-round bye on Monday and will play her second round match on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. (PST) against unseeded Mariko Atoji of San Diego.
