JUST A PASSIONATE ROGER FEDERER FAN    By Irene Lee

I write not as a tennis player, only as a passionate Roger Federer fan. I’ve never played a day of tennis in my life but I fell in love with how Roger played tennis at Wimbledon some years ago. I appreciate the beauty of his style, his relaxed demeanor that puts his fans at ease, his sense of joy and delight on and off court, and the fact that he has always been there to grace tennis courts all over the world. It has brought me much joy to watch him play, and especially to see him win.

I’ve waited for a long time for him to win another tournament this year. It finally happened on Sunday at the 2014 Shanghai Rolex Masters. He opened the venue back in 2004, so it must have been particularly meaningful for him to win Shanghai for the first time. I was so happy for him.

The Shanghai fans cheered so loudly during the semi-final with Novak that it must have annoyed him since he is World Number One. It was one of Roger’s best performance I have seen in recent memory. During the final with Gilles Simon, the fans were equally passionate. I cheered along with them just as loudly.

I would like to revisit the G.O.A.T. idea at this point because there is a chance that Roger can return to World Number One again. I feel that to be considered the G.O.A.T., the person has to care deeply about and contribute greatly to the sport, care about less successful players in prize monies and playing conditions, take time with fans and media, and to be consistent at participating in most tournaments. Roger has proven to us that he is that tennis player. It’s not just about head to head matches.

Some critics (who shall remain nameless) have been relentless in writing him off over the years and have commented repeatedly that he should retire since he will never repeat his glory days again. It feels so good to know that they are wrong about Roger once again. For myself, I shall enjoy watching Roger Federer play as long as he continues to play.
