BOUCHARD COMES UP SHORT IN THE WUHAN FINAL

For the third time in as many meetings, Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) was defeated in straight sets by world no. 3 Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic on Saturday in the final of the Wuhan Open, a WTA Premier 5 event in China.

Playing in her third final of the season and her second against Kvitova, Bouchard was defeated 6-3, 6-4. Despite maintaining a high first serve percentage of 75 percent, the 20-Canadian was broken in her opening service game of both sets and the Czech lefty never relinquished her quick leads on the strength of her trademark big hitting and timely serving.

Bouchard is now 1-2 in WTA finals. She won her maiden title this spring on the clay at Nurnberg and lost to Kvitova in the championship match at Wimbledon this summer. She has lost all six sets she has played against the two-time Grand Slam champion.

Thanks to her Wuhan title, the 14th of her career, Kvitova has qualified for the WTA Finals in Singapore. Bouchard will have to wait to confirm her spot in the season finale, but her Wuhan runner up finish has put her in good position within the top eight. Both players will now head to Beijing for the China Open, a WTA Premier Mandatory event. Bouchard is seeded eighth in the draw and gets an opening round bye. She will face the winner of Sabine Lisicki and Chinese wildcard Shilin Xu in the second round.
