The US Open men’s final between Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori drew a 1.9 rating on CBS, less than any other US Open men’s final in figures dating back two decades. That represents about 2.2 million watching on television.

The women’s final, however, got 4.0, similar to recent years where the women’s final has been played on Sunday, and featured Serena Williams.

And ESPN received a 1.6 rating for Roger Federer’s five-set comeback against Gael Monfils, the third-highest ever for a US Open match on the network.

This year’s final dropped 32% from 2013, which featured two bigger names in Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Generally, ratings for the Monday finals in recent years have been less than for its usual spot on Sunday. The 2007 final, where Roger Federer won against Novak Djokovic, and received a 4.2 rating on Sunday.

Having shown the US Open since it was first televised, CBS will not carry the tournament following this year. Declining ratings were one reason the network decided to not to pay more to renew its contract, with ESPN offering a hefty amount to show the full two weeks of the event.

Editors Note : trying to watch the US Open in America was very difficult this year. The matches kept moving from different CBS. Different ESPN. And the tennis channel. Our readers never stopped complaining. They just couldn’t find the tennis.

In the end it came down to two terrific players in a so so finals. Both the WTA and the ATP need to educate the world on its “rosters ” of players. The no names of today may be the next generation of Rafa and Novak’s. There’s only one Roger Federer.
