Lisicki, The Record Breaker

The record books of tennis now require another re-write after Germany’s Sabine Lisicki hit the fastest recorded serve in the history of women’s tennis.

Lisicki, the 2013 Wimbledon finalist and currently ranked world no.29, unleashed a delivery of 131 mph against Ana Ivanovic in the pairs opening matches at the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California.

The effort beat the previous record set by Venus Williams of 129mph nearly seven years ago at the 2007 US Open. However the new record was not an ace as Ivanovic managed to get a racket on the ball and did not herald a victory.

Lisickis big effort came in the 11th game of the first set with the match score at 5-all. However Ivanovic went on to win the match 7-6, 6-1. Well at least I broke the world record for fastest serve, tweeted the 24 year-old German who lost 6-4,6-0 to Simona Halep in this years Wimbledon quarterfinal.

The new record was confirmed and ratified by IDS, the company that tracks serve speeds at select WTA events throughout the season.
