BOUCHARD REACHES WIMBLEDON QUARTER-FINALS

For the third consecutive Grand Slam, Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) has reached the quarter-finals. To do so, the no. 13 seed at Wimbledon defeated Alizé Cornet of France 7-6(5), 7-5 on famed Centre Court Monday.

The match started with the roof open, but rain forced an interruption in play, so that the roof could be closed during the first set. There were no breaks of serve in the opening frame. In the tiebreak, Bouchard took a 4-1 lead, but Cornet won four points in a row to lead 5-4. The 20-year-old steadied to win the final three points, including an ace at 5-5, to take the opening set. Loyal to her reputation as a fighter, Cornet battled back and held a break advantage through most of the second set, but was unable to hold serve at 5-4, and Bouchard made the most of her chance to close out the match in straights. She avenges the loss she suffered to Cornet in the semifinals at Strasbourg last year and has not lost any of the four sets she has played on Centre Court at Wimbledon in her career.

“I am proud of the way I fought today,” said Bouchard after the match. “It wasn’t easy, Alizé is a great player and bring a lot of balls back in play, so I had to make sure to finish the points well.”

Bouchard becomes the first Canadian in the Open Era to reach the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. She will try and reach her third consecutive Major semifinal after getting to the final four at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros. She awaits the winner of the quarter-final match between Russia’s Maria Sharapova and Angelique Kerber of Germany.

BOUCHARD SERA DES QUARTS DE FINALE DE WIMBLEDON

Pour un troisième tournoi du Grand Chelem consécutif, Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) participera aux quarts de finale. Cette fois, la 13e tête de série a vaincu la Française Alizé Cornet 7-6(5) et 7-5 sur le Court central de Wimbledon.

La rencontre a commencé sous un toit ouvert, mais les joueuses ont dû rapidement retourner au vestiaire en milieu de première manche en raison de la pluie, le temps que l’on ferme le toit. Il n’y a eu aucun bris de service au cours de la manche initiale, nous menant ainsi vers le bris d’égalité. Bouchard a été la première à prendre les devants 4-1 avant de voir Cornet revenir avec quatre points consécutifs pour mener 5-4. La Canadienne s’est toutefois montrée intraitable à partir de ce moment pour mettre la main sur le jeu décisif et du même coup, la première manche. Fidèle à sa répution de battante, la Française n’a pas baissé les bras. Elle a été la première à réussir un bris de service à 2-2 pour éventuellement avoir une priorité de 4-2. Ce fut cependant insuffisant pour forcer la tenue d’une troisième manche. En effet, Bouchard a remporté cinq des six jeux suivants pour ainsi mettre fin au match et accéder aux quarts de finale. Elle prend donc sa revanche après avoir subi la défaite contre Cornet à Strasbourg, en 2013. Après quatre matchs disputés lors de la présente édition de Wimbledon, la 13e raquette mondiale n’a toujours pas concédé une seule manche.

« Je suis fière de la manière dont je me suis battue aujourd’hui », affirmait Bouchard après son match. « Ce n’était pas facile, Alizé est une excellente joueuse et ramène beaucoup de balles en jeu, je devais donc avoir de bonnes finissions de points ».

Bouchard tentera d’obtenir sa place au carré d’as après avoir déjà réussi l’exploit aux Internationaux d’Australie et de France. Elle sera opposée à la gagnante du duel opposant la Russe Maria Sharapova et l’Allemande Angelique Kerber.
