Forty-three-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm is turning back the clock at this year’s Aegon Classic. She will bid for a place in the semi-finals of the WTA Premier event in Birmingham on Friday after a pulling off a timeless 6-4, 6-0 win over defending champion Daniela Hantuchova on a day of surprises at the Priory Club on Thursday.

The Japanese veteran last reached the quarter-finals in Birmingham in 1989 but seems to be playing better than ever. “Today was almost a perfect day,” said Date-Krumm after her win over Hantuchova. “I believe in myself. On grass I have perfected my performance; it’s a very high level.”

Date-Krumm faces Casey Dellacqua in Friday’s quarter-finals after the Australian delivered an upset of her own in knocking out her countrywoman Samantha Stosur, the Aegon Classic’s second seed, with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback win. “Kimiko’s a good friend and probably one of the most inspirational players on Tour,” said Dellacqua. “ It’s quite amazing to see her out there. She moves probably better than any of the girls on the Tour. I know that I’m going to have to play well. Hopefully I can serve well and keep my momentum going.”

Top seed Ana Ivanovic continued her serene progress through the tournament and looked in ominous form in beating American Lauren Davis 6-1, 6-1. She will take on Coco Vandeweghe on Friday. Vandeweghe’s compatriot Sloane Stephens had to battle harder to get past Alison Riske in three sets.
