AEGON CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Queen’s Club

9th-15th June, 2014

Berdych, Dimitrov Start Well As Cilic Falls

Second seed Tomas Berdych and the youngest man in the Top 20, Grigor Dimitrov, both started well at the Aegon Championships, but the 2012 champion Marin Cilic fell at the first hurdle against an inspired Marinko Matosevic of Australia.

Berdych was made to fight against Australian James Duckworth, losing the second set 7-5, but he regrouped to win 6-4 in the decider and reach round three.

Dimitrov also had his hands full against British wild card James Ward, squeezing through a 7-5 first set before accelerating to victory. He will now meet either Edouard Roger-Vasselin or the 2007 runner-up Nicolas Mahut.

Afterwards, Dimitrov talked of the affinity he has with the crowd, organisers and the venue that hosts the Aegon Championships, The Queen’s Club.

“I played this tournament five years ago for the first time and ever since then I have had a special relationship with the people here, with the tournament.” said Dimitrov. “It’s just a great atmosphere, a historical court, and I don’t see any downsides. You just have to come out here, smile and do your best.”

Cilic is another fan of the tournament having won it once and reached the final last year, but his day went less well. He ran into the in-form Matosevic, who triumphed 6-4, 6-4.

On Wednesday, defending champion Andy Murray will make his return, with new coach Amelie Mauresmo in his corner for the first time. The 2006 Wimbledon champion met up with Murray at The Queen’s Club today.

Four-time champion Lleyton Hewitt will start proceedings on Centre Court before Murray meets Paul Henri Mathieu. After that, the Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka meets Marcos Baghdatis, and then Jo Wilfried Tsonga faces David Goffin.

The Aegon Championships has been staged at The Queen’s Club for more than a century.

Andy Murray, who completed the Aegon Championships-Wimbledon double in 2013, will try to join Roddick, Hewitt, John McEnroe and Boris Becker as the only four-time winners of one of the biggest, and most famous trophies in tennis.

In 2015, the Aegon Championships will attain ATP-500 status for the first as part of an expanded grass-court season. Wimbledon will move back a week and the Aegon Championships will be held 15th-21st June, 2015.
