Murray, Wawrinka Given Testing Draws At The Aegon Championships

Defending champion Andy Murray and top seed Stanislas Wawrinka will have to navigate difficult routes through the draw if they are to meet in the Aegon Championships final at The Queen’s Club on Sunday.

Third seed Murray receives a first round bye but could face Bernard Tomic or Radek Stepanek in the third round, if he gets past the winner of Paul-Henri Mathieu or Aljaz Bedene. Wawrinka also gets a bye, along with the other top eight seeds, but would face the 2006 Wimbledon semifinalist Marcos Baghdatis if the Cypriot gets past Bradley Klein in round one.

Also featuring in Murray’s half of the draw is Tomas Berdych. The Czech Republic world number six will face a second round contest with Dudi Sela if the Israeli comes through his first round match against a qualifier.

A second round match against fourth seed Grigor Dimitrov awaits Great Britain’s James Ward if he comes through his first round encounter with Blaz Rola of Slovenia.

The former finalist at The Queen’s Club, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is in the top half of the draw with Wawrinka and could face the young Austrian prospect Dominic Thiem in the second round if he defeats the Belgian David Goffin.

The other former champion in the draw, Lleyton Hewitt faces Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

The doubles draw sees Wawrinka and Dimitrov playing together, plus a number of other big singles names, with Bob and Mike Bryan the top seeds.

Tournament Director Ross Hutchins said: “This is my first year as Aegon Championships Tournament Director and it is very exciting to see the singles and doubles draws and the matches that we can now look forward to. Andy Murray returns as our defending champion, Stanislas Wawrinka is our top seed, and they will have plenty of competition from Tomas Berdych, Jo Wilfried Tsonga, Grigor Dimitrov, Ernests Gulbis, Lleyton Hewitt and many more talented players. With many of the top singles players such as Wawrinka, Dimitrov, Tsonga, Hewitt and Marin Cilic all playing doubles, along with the Bryan brothers, we are in for a fantastic week of tennis.”
