Roger Federer booked his spot in the third round of the French Open with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Diego Sebastian Schwartzman on Wednesday afternoon. Federer held 14 of 15 service games to advance after one hour and 43 minutes of play.

The result gave Federer his 60th career match win at Roland Garros. Coincidentally, that ties him with Rafael Nadal. Of course, Federer needed 74 matches in order to reach that mark; Nadal required a mere 61.

“I think it was kind of tough all the way through for me,” the 32-year-old Swiss said of his match against Schwartzman, a 21-year-old Argentine who was competing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career this week. “I didn’t feel relaxed for the entire match… He managed to put pressure on me and keep the pressure on me.”

Novak Djokovic dealt with no pressure of any kind during his second-round tilt with Jeremy Chardy. The only particularly interesting moment of the match came when Djokovic was attempting to close out the proceedings prior to what appeared to be an imminent rain delay. Playing at warp speed rarely seen by anyone since James Blake retired from tennis, Djokovic held easily in the final game and managed to get the job done 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 prior to any significant rainfall.

“I managed to play some good tennis and [I’m] already feeling like I’m improving my game as the tournament progresses,” the second-seed Serb explained.

“He was simply stronger than me,” Chardy admitted. “It’s difficult. You’re always under pressure. He knows everything. He can do everything. I never was able to dictate the game, so it wasn’t easy. There was nothing I could do. It was tough, but congratulations to him.”

Djokovic will go up against Marin Cilic on Friday, while Federer is in line to face Dmitry Tursunov.
