After a weekend of diplomatic wrangling Pakistan’s leading player Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi has been given the all clear to play in this week’s Davis Cup Asia Oceania tie against the Philippines in Manila.

Qureshi, who lost in the second round of the Sony Open in Miami alongside regular partner Rohan Bopanna maintained he would not make the 8,000 miles air journey to Islamabad, involving several changes of flight, in order to get Philippine visa

The 34 year-old, who is the only member of the Pakistani team with a world ranking of any kind and holds the national record for the most number of Davis Cup rubbers played at both singles and doubles, wanted the nation’s tennis federation to arrange the visa without having him make a personal appearance.

On Friday Assam’s father Chesham told The Nation daily in Pakistan “It is the duty of the federation to arrange Philippine visa for Aisam. He had returned last night from US and is very tired so the PTF should contact embassy and arrange visa for all the players.”

News that the Pakistan Tennis Federation had finally complied to their star player’s wishes only came through this morning (Monday) after the rest of the team, comprising of Aqeel Khan and Yaris Khan along with captain Mohammed Khalid left for Philippines on Sunday night from Lahore.
