Final Quotes

Martina Hingis: “Obviously it’s very exciting when you convert match point and you’re like, ‘Yes, we did it.’ But Sabine played incredible. That super tie-breaker, I was like, ‘Okay, I better put the ball in and let her do the rest.’ Because she was really on fire. From 5-all on it was just amazing. She definitely gets going when it’s tight – other players sometimes go down, but she lifts her level in those moments.”

Sabine Lisicki: “I always wanted to play with Martina, obviously. We talked about it at Wimbledon last year, and finally we did it here in the States. I think we’re just happy and really enjoying it.”

Doubles – Final: (WC) Hingis/Lisicki def. (2) Makarova/Vesnina 4-6 6-4 10-5

Martina Hingis and Sabine Lisicki just kept getting stronger in this match, winning the last six points to take the title.

This is worth thinking about. Hingis won her first doubles title was at Hamburg 1995, just less than nineteen years ago; her first doubles Slam came in 1996, almost eighteen years ago…Now we’re not going to claim for a moment that she is likely to threaten Martina Navratilova’s record for longest time between first and last doubles titles. But just think about all the changes she’s seen in that time. When she started, serve and volley was still normal doubles. Nowadays, any active player who saw it would probably think it was the result of some sort of psychiatric illness. Yet here Hingis is, winning a title — her first in more than seven years; her last win was Doha 2007 with Kirilenko. It’s doubles title #38 of her career. What does this say about doubles today?

Hingis increases her points by more than 250%, and will rise from #173 to probably a little above #60. Sabine Lisicki, #64 coming in, is in the #35 range. They really do have a shot at a Roland Garros seed, although they certainly aren’t there yet. But they’ll surely be one of the most dangerous unseeded teams if they don’t make it!

And, perhaps, one of the ones getting the most publicity. In the hour after this concluded, we saw three wire service stories about it. Which is about three more wire service stories than we see about the average doubles tournament win….

It is stunning to realize that Makarova/Vesnina haven’t won a title since winning Roland Garros 2013. Still, they added enough points to move back up to #3 and #4 in the rankings. And it appears they’re up to #2 in the doubles Race. But it’s going to be tough to qualify for the year-end event if they don’t win something this year….
