FRANCIS TIAFOE TO PLAY IN ASICS EASTER BOWL

AT INDIAN WELLS TENNIS GARDEN APRIL 5-13

The No. 7-ranked junior in the current ITF junior world rankings, Francis Tiafoe of College Park, Md., will be the top-seeded boy when the ASICS Easter Bowl begins April 5-13.

The Asics Easter Bowl 47th annual tournament will move to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden this year where the nation’s top boys’ and girls’ junior tennis players will have a chance to play on the same courts as their favorite players did three weeks ago at the BNP Paribas Open. Admission is FREE DAILY to attend the event.

The 16-year-old Tiafoe is the player to watch. Last December, Tiafoe became the youngest Boys’ 18s champion in the 67-year history of the Metropolia Orange Bowl International Championships.

The iconic junior tournament started by Seena Hamilton in 1968 and now led by Tournament Director Lornie Kuhle. Long considered the Super Bowl of junior tennis, the ASICS Easter Bowl’s status has now been raised to a new level by being played at what is arguably the finest tennis facility in the world, The Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The Tennis Garden features 29 hard courts and hosts a number of tournaments and special events including the Big West Conference Championships, World Team Tennis National Championships, and USTA National Championships.

There are other changes in store. The 18’s will feature a 64-qualifying draw for the first time, which will take place on Saturday and Sunday, April 5-6. The main draw will start on Monday, April 7 and conclude on Sunday, April 13. The 18s is an ITF Grade B1 and USTA Level 1 event.

The 16’s, 14’s and 12’s will be four-day events taking place Thursday-Sunday with 64 singles draw and 32 doubles and is a USTA Level 1A designated tournament.

Since its inception in 1968, when Harold Solomon beat Jimmy Connors, the ASICS Easter Bowl has been noted not only for the hospitality given to players and parents, but for its far-reaching media exposure and for keeping all the game’s important issues in public view.

No other junior tennis tournament in the United States possesses the same rich history as the ASICS Easter Bowl. The tournament was started in New York City by Hamilton and has been played in Florida, Arizona and California.

Sponsors include: ASICS, Laurel Springs School, Indian Wells Tennis Garden, the Taylor Dent Junior Academy, the tennis website 10sBalls.com, Tennis Warehouse, USTA, The Old Spaghetti Factory, SCTA and Mind Matters.

Editors Note : “BIG BOSS ” played in the first Easterbowl. As well as working in many capacities in NYC , in Florida , and in California for Seena. The list of players that have played in it is a who’s Who of junior tennis in America. The list of people who worked it might be longer … We wish Lornie and his team a great success. Lornie is a lifelong friend of tennis. He has the Bobby Riggs Museum , brought Davis Cup to a baseball stadium (the Petco Park where the San Diego Padres play. ) He is one of our sports true GUARDIANS. For the past few years if you have seen the legend and tennis star Pancho Segura around telling the pros tidbits of his brilliance its because of his buddy Lornie. We wish the tourney great success it’s got a lot of great competition from kids coming in from all over the country.
