Echoes of Andy Murray’s historic Wimbledon title are now fading after ten months but the London borough of Merton, actual legal home of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club, is set to revise them by bestowing a local honor on the Scot by making him Freeman of the Borough.

In a ceremony which seems the equivalent of handing over the keys to the city, the municipality will seek to recognize Murray’s win over Novak Djokovic in the 2013 final which ended three quarters of a century of British men’s embarrassment at not having lifted the local grand slam title.

Murray is not alone in receiving his gong, with three previous women’s singles champions also nominated for recognition. The official announcement of the initiative is due for next week, according to London’s Guardian.

Others on the Honours short-list include 1977 champion Virginia Wade, 1969 winner Ann Haydon-Jones, and Angela Mortimer, who earned her title in 1961.

The official ceremony for the quartet of current and former players will be scheduled for the summer tennis season. “The admission of these great sportspeople as Honorary Freemen of the Borough is the highest honor the council can give, “said Merton’s mayor. “We have not added any individuals to this list since 2006 and we are delighted to welcome those who have made significant sporting contributions to Great Britain and whose great achievements took place in the borough.”
