TODAY’S MEN’S NEWS

Miami

One update on yesterday’s edition: As noted in World News, Andy Murray’s issue with Novak Djokovic was that Djokovic’s racquet went across the net, not that it touched it. And replays do seem to have confirmed his contention. Not that that helps Murray any.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (1) R Nadal def. (12) M Raonic 4-6 6-2 6-4

For most of the first set of this, Rafael Nadal was holding fairly easily and Milos Raonic was struggling. Then, out of the blue, Raonic had a break point in game ten, and Nadal double-faulted, and that was the set.

Nadal proceeded to break in the very first game of the second set, and go up 4-0 before Raonic eventually held. In the third, they both held until the seventh game, when Nadal broke. Then it was just a matter of serving it out. He will, of course, remain #1. But he was out there for two and a half hours, and he played the late match. His stamina is going to be tested.

Milos Raonic lasted long enough to reach #10, matching his career high. Too bad we’re going into the clay season; that’s not a surface that’s likely to help him in his quest to go higher.

Singles – Quarterfinal: (7) T Berdych def. (22) A Dolgopolov 6-4 7-6(7-3)

Alexandr Dolgopolov led by a break for most of the second set. But he lost it toward the end of the set — blowing a set point along the way — and played a bad tiebreak. Which ends his Top Twenty hopes; we show him at #22. Tomas Berdych, with this win, moves past David Ferrer in the rankings; Berdych will be #5 (or better) and Ferrer, #4 coming in, will fall all the way to #6.

For Berdych, this is career win #450. With Lleyton Hewitt having earlier recorded #600, this event seems to be turning into a big tournament for milestones.

Doubles – Semifinal: (1) Bryan/Bryan def. (8) Llodra/Mahut 7-6(7-2) 6-2

It appears that this will be enough points to let the Bryans regain their rightful place at the top of the ATP Race standings; we show Kubot/Lindstedt with 2270, the Bryans with 2275. If the Bryans win the title, obviously, they will build a substantial lead.

Doubles – Semifinal: Cabal/Farah def. (WC) Harrison/Sock 2-6 6-4 11-9

When the surprise team of the tournament face the surprise team of the year, who do you expect to win? In this case, it was the team of the year…. Cabal/Farah came here #7 in the ATP Race; it looks as if they’ll leave with a spot in the Top Five.
