Miami

Singles – Quarterfinal: (2) Li Na def. (11) Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 7-5

This was a very long, very tough battle — it really does seem as if Caroline Wozniacki is coming back to life. Coming back enough, at least, to have put herself in the Top Fifteen. But she had a lot of help — Li Na made 32 errors in the first set, as against just one winner for Wozniacki. Wozniacki was up 5-3 in the second set, and couldn’t finish it off. So she will have to settle for #14. Li can’t rise above #2 this week, but at least she keeps building her lead over everyone not named “Serena Williams.”

Singles – Quarterfinal: (10) Dominika Cibulkova def. (3) Agnieszka Radwanska 3-6 7-6(7-5) 6-3

This took more than two and a half hours, and Agnieszka Radwanska had three match points. Radwanska won only 41% of first serve points, and Dominika Cibulkova was only slightly better at 53% (and 30% on second serve). In all, there were 19 breaks (11 of them in the first 12 games of the match). But Cibulkova again showed why 2014 is turning into the best year of her career: she never gave up. This finally does it: She is Top Ten. She is up to #10 in safe points, with still a slight possibility that she could rise to #9 if she can keep winning; Sara Errani will fall from #10 to #11. Agnieszka Radwanska had long since clinched #3, but this loss leaves her more than a thousand points behind Li Na. There is no real chance of her climbing any time soon.

At least she might finally get to rest all her various injuries — in addition to the knee problem that bothered her at Indian Wells, and her shoulder problem, she had the trainer out to work on her right hand during the match.

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (5) Black/Mirza def. (4) Peschke/Srebotnik 6-4 6-3

This was the day that they brought out the former #1 doubles players: Cara Black and Martina Hingis both played their quarterfinals — and both won. The win will earn Black another post-comeback high; we show her moving past Kveta Peschke to #9. And Katarina Srebotnik will fall from #5 to #7. We currently show the Top Ten as follows:

1..(1) PENG ……………9105

2..(2) HSIEH …………. 8985

3..(3) ERRANI ………….7045

3..(3) VINCI …………. 7045

5..(6) VESNINA ……….. 6975*

6..(7) MAKAROVA ………..6875*

7..(5) SREBOTNIK ……… 6265

8..(8) MIRZA …………. 5845*

9.(10) BLACK …………. 5450*

10..(9) PESCHKE ……….. 5380

Doubles – Quarterfinal: (WC) Hingis/Lisicki def. Medina Garrigues/Shvedova 3-6 7-6(9-7) 10-7

Sabine Lisicki has been sick, so maybe she was a little slow to get into the match. Hingis/Lisicki were broken in their very first game. But they did rather better from there, though they had to save three match points along the way. We’ve no idea what it says about the state of doubles that Hingis was able to come back from retirement, team with a player who doesn’t play much doubles, and reach the semifinal of one of the strongest tournaments there is, but it’s hard to imagine that it’s good.

This will take Hingis to around #105. Lisicki, who is defending points, will rise about a dozen spots above her current #64.

NEXT WEEK ON THE WTA:

Charleston (Premier/Green Clay). Defending Champion: Serena Williams

Monterrey (International/Hard). Defending Champion: Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
