Miami

Rafael Nadal hammered Fabio Fognini 6-2, 6-2 in just over an hour as Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray set up a re-run of the 2013 Wimbledon final. Nadal next plays Canadian 12th seed Milos Raonic, who reached the Miami quarters for the first time by beating German Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-4 on a fourth match point.

Nadal won his 20th match of the season after spending a total of just over two hours on court for his last pair of outing, wins which thrilled the mainly Latin local audience. “I’m very happy, in my first three matches I was able to find the right rhythm on court,” said Nadal. “I was aggressive and played with no mistakes.

“Today was a very strange match, I’m sorry for Fabio., He felt something from yesterday near the ribs, it was not easy for him to play this match.”

Second seed Djokovic got lucky after a wet forecast turned dry, with the three-time champion advancing to face Murray, the Wimbledon winner. Djokovic earned his 28th win at the tournament in 82 minutes as he beat Spanish 16th seed Tommy Robredo 6-3, 7-5. Murray, the sixth seed, put out French number 11 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-1.

Britain’s Murray trails Djokovic 8-11 in their rivalry. The Scot, who underwent back surgery six months ago, admitted he felt some twinges in his hip and is getting checked out by his physio.

Djokovic earned respect of the fans as he gave his opponent a point in the third game of the second set on an erroneous call instead of having it re-played. “It’s something that is part of the sport and fair play that. I expect everybody else to do the same,” he said.

Swiss fifth seed and two-time champion Roger Federer will next play Japan’s Kei Nishikori after hammering Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-2 in 49 minutes. Nishikori booked his spot as he defeated fourth seed David Ferrer 7-6 (9-7), 2-6, 7-6 (11-9).

It was the opposite for Australian Open winner Stanislas Wawrinka, who lost to Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. Seventh seed Tomas Berdych eliminated John Isner 6-3, 7-5.
