Miami

 

Top seed and holder Williams will open on Thursday in the second round after a bye against Yaroslava Shvedova, who beat former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 6-2 in first-round play. Ukrainian Elina Svitolina put out American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Australian Casey Dellacqua stopped Swiss Stefanie Voegele 6-3, 6-2 and Caroline Garcia defeated Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak 6-3, 7-5.

There were also victories after a rainy start to opening day at Crandon Park, with Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova putting out Galina Voskoboeva of Kazakhstan 6-2, 7-5. Japan’s Kurumi Nara advanced past German Annika Beck 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Monica Puig of Puerto Rico overcame Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) while Varvara Lepchenko earned an American win after last week’s debacle at Indian Wells, beating Yanina Wickmayer 7-5, 6-1. Dutch newconmer Indy de Vroome stopped Anna Schmiedlova and South African Chanelle Scheepers put out Sílvia Soler-Espinosa 6-3, 6-0.
