Combine the two men’s events–singles and doubles–at the BNP Paribas Open and the United States arguably performed better than any other country.

No nation boasted more than one singles quarter-finalist and America’s John Isner made it all the way to the semis before succumbing to Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-7(2), 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. Isner and Sam Querrey made a run to the doubles semifinals before losing to compatriots Bob and Mike Bryan in a super-tiebreaker. The Bryans eventually took the title with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares.

Perhaps American’s greatest accomplishment of the fortnight, however, was Isner’s triumphant return to the top 10. He clinched such a feat when he beat Ernests Gulbis 7-6(4), 7-6(3) on Friday. And he did it despite January and February months that were plagued by an ankle injury (Isner retired from his first-round Australian Open match).

When the new rankings are revealed on Monday, Isner–and his country–will be back in the top 10 for the first time since he vacated his spot in October of 2012.

“I didn’t know I got back in the top 10 until they announced that after the match,” Isner commented. “I have gotten back in there with not great results from the slams, so there are some areas with my [ranking] where I can gain a lot of points going forward from here. It’s up to me to go after that and try to do it. I guess 2012 I got in the top 10. I stayed there for a good bit. It’s hard to stay there. Everyone wants to get in the top 10. I fell back, but I have been knocking on the door for quite some time. It feels good to get back in there.”

It has to feel good for American tennis fans, too.
