India’s top-ranked singles player Somdev Devvarman will make his Mylan World TeamTennis debut this July for the San Diego Aviators after being selected as the first overall pick in today’s 2014 Mylan WTT Roster Draft at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.

Devvarman, a two-time former NCAA singles champion at the University of Virginia, topped the list in one of the deepest drafts in recent years. The 29-year-old has been ranked as high as No. 62 in singles and has main draw wins at all four majors. Devvarman joins fellow Aviators Raven Klaasen, Kveta Peschke and marquee players Daniela Hantuchova and the Bryan Brothers.

Rising U.S. star Vicky Duval was the second overall pick in the Draft, returning to the Philadelphia Freedoms team owned by league co-founder Billie Jean King.

Among the additional first-round draft highlights included the Austin Aces picking former world No. 2 Vera Zvonareva, who is on the comeback trail after missing the entire 2013 WTA season with a right-shoulder injury. Zvonareva, who holds four Grand Slam titles in doubles and mixed doubles and reached two major singles finals, returns to Mylan WTT for the first time in 11 years.

The Mylan WTT regular season starts on Sunday, July 6 and runs through Wednesday, July 23. The top two teams from each conference advance to the Mylan WTT Conference Championships on Thursday, July 24. The Eastern and Western Conference champions will face off at the Mylan WTT Finals on Sunday, July 27, on the home court of the Western Conference champion.
