Andy Roddick may be on the sidelines of tennis now but that small fact does not prevent the now-retired former No. 1 from throwing out his opinions on current players in the game.

For one thing, the American who lost three Wimbledon finals to Roger Federer is unsure of the impact Swiss Australian Open champion Stanislas Wawrinka might make after beating Rafael Nadal in the Melbourne final. “It will be interesting to see how he does with the expectation now. It’s one thing when it’s all upside but another thing to win matches you’re supposed to win.”

As for his predictions on the upcoming Masters 1000 double next month at Indian Wells and Miami, Roddick is also not lacking a thought or two. Right now, he’s tipping holder Nadal: “He’s a nightmare there because it’s a slow court,” said the 31-year-old now making a career as a broadcast commentator, “I played him twice there and I just felt like I was hanging on because he can back way up and create space with that. That could be his best hard court surface because they ball flies.”

Looking ahead to Miami, Roddick is unsure of who might dominate in Florida. “Those two tournaments are spaced out to where you can do well in both. And they’re not physically demanding because you get a day off between matches and they’re not three-out-of-five-setters. In 2010, I got to the final in Indian Wells and then won Miami. So I really think that whoever does well in Indian Wells will likely hold form in Miami.”
