Andy Murray’s mother Judy has sprung to the defence of her seventh-ranked son, saying that he had no knowledge of a controversial decision regarding tenants who will be forced to vacate a building now owned by the Murrays which is becoming a part of their new hotel project.

Cromlix House outside Murray’s childhood village of Dunblane is due to open in April, after being bought a year ago for more than $3 million by the family. It has been given a refurbishment and open as an elite five-star hotel.

Scottish media has been aflame with reports that tenants housed in a building called the Square which sits near the hotel will all have to leave to make way for future hotel staff. World No. 7 Murray has been painted as the evil landlord in the case.

Judy Murray says it’s all a beat-up and that her son knew nothing of the finer details. As far as the Murrays were concerned, the Square came with vacant tenancy. “I feel this has been manufactured into a story and Andy has been dragged into this when he has no knowledge of any of this,” mother Murray told Scottish media. “The facts are I agreed to buy the houses in The Square with vacant possession and with the short-term leases it was thought there would be no problem.”

Sellers of the property foresee no problems in removing the tenants, all of whom they say knew they would eventually have to get out. “The simple fact is that there is no public transport to the hotel and we felt we had to provide for our staff who could be working late at functions or whatever. It was the obvious move to buy The Square and we have gone about it in a professional and caring manner. The tenants have always known the situation and I understand that accommodation for them will be found,” said Judy Murray, who said that the local jobs will be created in the end.

“It is important for us to put something back in our backyard. I accept that there may be cynical comments about making money but we could have bought a hotel anywhere. We are conscious that this will bring more than 40 jobs to the local community and will revitalise a local asset.”

Editors note: remodeling this old gem was a huge undertaking. We are proud of Andy and all of his efforts. It will be a grand place for another 100 years or more.
