Australian Open

Singles – Semifinal: (1) Rafael Nadal def. (6) Roger Federer 7-6(7-4) 6-3 6-3

Until this round, Roger Federer had looked like his old self. In this match, he looked like his old self in another way: He couldn’t handle Rafael Nadal. Nadal’s hand was a mess; he had bandages on all his fingers and his palm. But his shots didn’t show any problems; he pushed Federer into an amazing fifty errors in three sets.

Nadal’s lead over Novak Djokovic is now up to some 3700 points. It will be more than 4000 points if he wins the title — and, of course, he has won Slams before, and opponent Stanislas Wawrinka has never even played a Slam final. In terms of history, it’s about as one-sided as a final can be.

Roger Federer defended his points, and certainly looked better here than he did for most of last year. But because both Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych added points, Federer will fall from #6 all the way to #8. He’s a very strong #8 — it will be a long time before he goes lower — but he is no longer the Swiss #1, and it may be hard for him to get that spot back. Let alone getting back to the Top Five.

Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: (6) Mirza/Tecau def. Gajdosova/Ebden 2-6 6-3 10-2

Mixed rankings say that both these teams should have been seeded — #5 and #8, respectively. No wonder it was close. It will be interesting to see if Horia Tecau, who won this title two years ago with Mattek-Sands but whose results at big events have otherwise been poor, can handle the pressure of the championship match.

Mixed Doubles – Semifinal: Mladenovic/Nestor def. J Zheng/Lipsky 6-3 6-1

Mladenovic/Nestor may be unseeded, but Mixed rankings would make them the #1 seeds. They have an extremely impressive record in the last year: a final at Roland Garros, the title at Wimbledon, and the semifinal at the U. S. Open. The seedings may not make them the favorites. History may say otherwise.
