Montreal, January 16, 2014 – Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) became the third Canadian to reach the third round at the 2014 edition of the Australian Open on Thursday.

Raonic was forced to wait before taking to the court given that matches were suspended in the afternoon due to extreme heat. Once the match did start, Raonic was all business en route to a 7-6(9), 6-4, 6-4 straight sets victory over Victor Hanescu of Romania to join his compatriots Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) and Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC) in round three. This is the third straight year that Raonic has reached the third round in Melbourne. His best result came in 2011 and 2013 when he advanced to the Round of 16. The 23 year-old Canadian will now face world no. 22 Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in a much-anticipated encounter bewteen two of tennis’ rising stars. They have played twice previously, each winning once.

Pospisil, who was scheduled to play his third round match Friday against Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka was forced to withdraw from the tournament because of a back injury that he has been dealing with since the Brisbane event. He also withdrew from doubles. He was supposed to team up Austrian Julian Knowle. “I had some MRI results and it wasn’t recommended that I step on the court,” Pospisil said. “There was some risk involved with a disc. I want to be sure that I make a smart decision and not jeapordize the rest of my season.”

For her part, Bouchard will play her third round match tonight against American Lauren Davis.

Bouchard, quant à elle, reprendra l’action ce soir face à l’Américaine Lauren Davis.
