Montreal, January 9, 2014 – There will be three Canadians seeds in singles at a Grand Slam for the first time when the Australian Open gets underway on Sunday night in Melbourne.
Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC) and Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) are among the top 32 players at the first Major of the season.
Seeded no. 11, Raonic will have his first meeting with Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver, ranked no. 80 in the world. The Canadian has twice reached the Round of 16 at the Australian Open including last year before being eliminated by Roger Federer. Raonic finds himself in the same section as World No. 1 Rafael Nadal and world no. 5 Juan Martin Del Potro.
Seeded no. 28 in the men’s draw, Pospisil will face hard serving Samuel Groth of Australia. The 23-year-old Canadian won the only previous meeting between the two. This will be Pospisil’s first appearance in the Australian Open main draw. He lost in the second round of qualifying in 2012. Pospisil is in the bottom half of the draw in the same section as defending champion Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka.
Bouchard will also be playing the main draw in Melbourne for the first time. Last year she lost in the first round of qualifying and in 2014 she is the tournament’s no. 30 seed. She will take on China’s Hao Chen Tang in the first round. Bouchard is in the top quarter alongside World No. 1 Serena Williams and Sara Errani.

Montréal, le 9 janvier 2014 – Pour la première fois, il y aura trois Canadiens parmi les têtes d’affiche des x du simple d’un tournoi du Grand Chelem lorsque le coup d’envoi des Internationaux d’Australie sera donné, dimanche soir.
En effet, Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Vasek Pospisil (Vancouver, BC) et Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) font partie des 32 meilleurs joueurs de cette première épreuve du Grand Chelem de la saison.
Onzième tête de série, Raonic aura comme premier adversaire l’Espagnol Daniel Gimeno-Traver, 80e mondial. Le Canadien a atteint les huitièmes de finale des Internationaux d’Australie à deux reprises, notamment l’an dernier alors qu’il s’était incliné face à Roger Federer. Raonic se trouve dans la même partie du tableau que le numéro un mondial Rafael Nadal et Juan Martin Del Potro (5e).
Pospsil, 28e tête d’affiche, sera opposé au puissant Australien Samuel Groth. Le Canadien de 23 ans a remporté leur seul affrontement précédent. En lever de rideau, elle croisera le fer avec la Chinoise Hao Chen Tang. Bouchard se situe dans le quart supérieur du tableau, aux côtés de la numéro un mondiale Serena Williams et de Sara Errani.
